Getting Started - Snipping and Researching

0:00 Alright, we're going to go over the basics here on this, uh, short video, try to keep it short. Um, how to do, uh, pathways and all the stuff you're gonna need to do research so you can get started. 0:14 The number one thing you're going to need is this. Thanks. You can download it from our website, uh, on the, my pathway, my pathways that I owe trial page. 0:25 There's a download button. There's some directions here. Here you go. You can So we're in beta. You have to put it in developer mode. 0:32 Hopefully you're not in an overly managed device that stops that. But today we're in beta. And so we don't have it, uh, certified by Chrome or anything yet. 0:42 Alright, get your extension. And then go back to Pathways. So on the left we've got tags, web refs, people, orgs. 0:53 And then it kind of changes categories. And I'll get to that in a second. Tap. Pathways, web refs, people, orgs are all of the just, uh, they're like the objects that make Pathways work, affiliations, connections, pathways, represents the relationships between those objects. 1:08 So maybe you consider tags, web refs, people, orgs, like, uh. You know, edges, no, sorry, nodes, and then these are different kinds of edges that might exist between those nodes. 1:21 Alright, the most important one, place to start is P. So, I've found a random site that looks interesting. We've got a guy here named Don Champion. 1:31 So let's just start with him. Do I know Don Champion? No, I don't know Don Champion. Doesn't matter. I'm gonna put him in- Pathways. 1:37 So, real simple. Add a person. You do want to give you- There are a lot of people in this world, and there's probably a lot of people named Don, uh, Campion, not Champion. 1:47 So, make sure, um, in the unique identifier, you give him something where you can- you'll know who he is versus all the other Don Campions in the world. 1:55 Your name should just be his name. We don't allow any, uh, punctuation or anything in there. Pretty much everything else you can ignore for now. 2:03 And it's not that interesting. Well, it might be interesting. It's not that important for you to get started. Once you have a person, you can snip a person. 2:10 So, I activate them from snipping. I'll get a, uh, notification. I have down here that validates. I've done what I intended to do. 2:16 And then I'm gonna go back to my page. These are money pages. This is a bunch of list of names of people my, my guy knows. 2:23 In this case, my guy's. So I will highlight whatever text I want. If I'm going real fast, I can just do the old control A. 2:30 I'm gonna be careful with that. If you have ads or something, you might, you might grab data that's not useful. 2:35 In this case, I'm pretty safe on the f the first website. Grab that and hit my extension. It's gonna tell me, hey, you've successfully sn to the web breath, uhm, and attached it to Don Campion. 2:47 So let's go open this and then I'll come back for a sec. And this pop up has some interaction with it. 2:53 I can put a note here. The biggest use case for that is if Don, if I skip a page, Don's not on, but I know Don is a major donor to spare to the purpose for whatever reason. 3:03 I'll put, he's a major donor here. So that the next person who runs across this in Pathways will know why I snipped this page. 3:09 And if you don't do that and you snip a page that does not have your person on it, you're just creating all kinds of confusion for the next guy. 3:17 So, don't do that. Umm, if I have to snip- multiple times on one page, which will often happen if they have like a real complicated web page and you have to click multiple things and multiple names pop up and you can't highlight them all at one time. 3:31 I can click this again to save it. That saved my note back to Pathways and I click it one more time to close. 3:37 And now I can go about snipping and we'll create a new web graph even if it's the same exact data. 3:43 Got it? That's important. Uh, let's look at the web graph itself. It's a pretty simple record. Of the URL where I found my stuff, found my data. 3:53 I got the person, uh, who I, who I attached the data to. I got the text that I took. Uh, you'd be surprised how often pages like this change. 4:03 Um, as people coming in and off boards. And whatever. And then down here it'll tell me how many tags it has, but it won't show me the tags on this webpage. 4:12 I would, uh, uh. Am I wrong? Yeah, I am wrong. Alright, if I hit that button up there it'll give me the tags. 4:19 Sometimes there's gonna be a lot of tags, so we're trying to save, uh, how much we're, how much we're putting on your system here, uh, data-wise. 4:27 So, here's all the tags it created. Pretty good tags. That's about it. I don't usually look at a web graph. 4:33 There's not usually a reason to. Uh, I create the web graph and I keep moving. That's the basics of snipping and researching. 4:40 You do this to your targets. You do this to your self. You do this to people in your network to build out a- network. 4:46 Uh, we'll kind of cover how you build out your network in the next video. But this is the basics of research. 4:52 Thanks. Thanks.
